First things first, if you’ve made it through the first few months of your teaching career, well done! That is no small feat. You’ve survived (and hopefully even thrived throughout) lesson planning, parent nights, and the emotional rollercoaster of finding your feet in a new classroom.
At SOS Teacher Agency, we work with graduate teachers across Victoria every day, placing educators in schools, supporting our new teachers, and helping build confidence as you tackle the challenge of your first year teaching. We’ve walked alongside countless first-year teachers, and we have seen what makes a difference early on to a new graduate's teaching experience.
So, whether you're just beginning or you are a few months in and starting to reflect, here's some feedback on what works, what to watch for, and how to keep moving forward.
You’re More Prepared Than You Feel
We’ve heard it again and again: “I feel like I should know what I’m doing by now!” But the truth is, every teacher feels like that at some point, and it doesn't mean you're unprepared.
Research from Monash University backs this up: most teachers in Australia, especially those who’ve completed a Master of Teaching, say their Initial Teacher Education gave them a solid foundation. And from what we’ve seen with our teachers at SOS Teacher Agency, those skills and strategies start to shine through once you’ve settled into a rhythm. Trust in what you’ve learned, it’s there, even if it takes time to feel automatic.
Don’t Underestimate the Power of Good Support
One thing that continues to stand out in our placements. Support systems matter more than graduates first think.
Programs like Victoria’s Career Start and the Effective Mentoring Program have transformed the first-year experience for many grads. At SOS, we’ve seen new teachers flourish when they’re supported by a strong mentor, given time to plan, and connected to professional learning support systems from the get-go.
If you haven’t accessed this kind of support yet, don’t worry, it’s not too late to reach out. These programs were designed with you in mind.

Relationships: The Secret Ingredient to a Smooth First Year
One of the most powerful things you can focus on as a new teacher and something we always stress to our graduates, is building real relationships.
With your students, it’s about learning who they are, how they work best, and showing them you care. This trust makes everything else smoother, from behaviour management to learning outcomes.
With your colleagues, it’s about staying curious, open, and willing to ask for help. We’ve seen graduate teachers build amazing support networks just by making the effort to connect. Whether that’s joining a lunchtime conversation or asking someone for feedback on a lesson.
Reflect Often (It’s How You Grow Fast)
You’ve probably already learned that no two teaching days are ever the same. That’s why reflection is one of the best habits to build early on.
At SOS Teacher Agency, we encourage our early-career teachers to keep track of what’s working, what’s not, and how they’re feeling week to week. You don’t need a formal journal; even a few notes in your planner can go a long way.
This reflective mindset doesn’t just help you improve quickly; at the end of each term, it can remind you of how far you’ve come.
Stay in the Loop with National Support Initiatives
A lot is changing in the education space in Australia, and much of it is aimed at making your life as a teacher more sustainable and supported.
From the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan to Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships and targeted professional development opportunities, the focus is clear: we need to support and retain new teachers.
By staying on top of these initiatives, new teachers can take full advantage, whether that’s applying for scholarships, accessing PD, or knowing where the most supportive schools are. It doesn’t take much to stay in the know, but it can make a massive difference in how your first year flows.
Organisation Is Your Friend (But Progress, Not Perfection)
The perfect lesson plan may not come together every time, especially in the first few months. But getting yourself somewhat organised now sets you up for calmer and enjoyable terms ahead.
We always advise our SOS graduate teachers to build up a bank of go-to lesson activities, behaviour routines, and assessment templates. If you become a regular CRT at a particular school, then use what your school already has in place, and don’t be afraid to tweak and make it your own. You don’t need flashy displays or to laminate everything, just practical go to systems that help you stay ahead when you are under pressure.
Don’t Wait Until You’re Drowning to Ask for Help
This one is big. We've seen it over and over again: teachers who reach out early feel more confident, less isolated, and more in control. There is no problem in saying, "I'm not sure how to handle this," or "Can you show me how you do it?"
We care about the schools we service and our teachers, and we are not just here to find you a placement. We’re here for ongoing support, whether it’s helping you navigate classroom challenges, adjust your workload, or simply reminding you that yes, what you’re doing matters. Understanding that you are part of a community and never waiting until you feel isolated is a big learning curve for first-year teachers.
You’ve Made It Through the Hardest Part…Now Keep Going
If you’ve made it through your first few months, you are already winning. You’ve shown up, adapted, learned fast, and made an impact. That’s something to be proud of.
Keep learning. Keep showing up. And keep remembering: you’ve already proven you belong in this profession.
