Keys to Success
A Helpful & Practical Guide that we at SOS Teacher Agency thought everyone could benefit from:
Keys to Success
Mastering these essential principles will help you manage your time, energy and priorities effectively so you can thrive in your teaching career without burnout.
Manage your time or it will manage you
Time is your most valuable resource. Plan deliberately to focus on what truly matters, set boundaries around your workday and eliminate distractions to protect your productivity. (From Getting Things Done by David Allen)
Accept what you can’t control
No educator can do everything perfectly. Embrace imperfection, prioritise tasks realistically and focus on progress rather than perfection to maintain your wellbeing.
(From The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown)
Find purpose in your work
Connect your daily tasks to your bigger why. Whether it’s inspiring students, lifelong learning or community impact, a clear sense of purpose fuels motivation and resilience.
(From Start with Why by Simon Sinek)
Four Skills for Effective Educators
Strategic Prioritisation
Grounded in Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, mastering the ability to prioritise important over urgent tasks empowers educators to focus on impactful teaching strategies and student growth rather than reactive workloads.
Deliberate Time Management
Research from educational psychologists emphasizes the effectiveness of time-blocking techniques for focused lesson planning, assessment, and professional learning. Allocating uninterrupted time blocks enhances concentration and lesson quality.
Reflective Teaching Practice
According to Schön’s theory of reflective practice, effective educators critically assess their instructional methods and student interactions. This continuous reflection promotes adaptive teaching, improved student engagement, and professional growth.
Wellbeing and Professional Boundaries
Recognised by the OECD’s Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), maintaining healthy boundaries and prioritising self-care are fundamental to sustaining motivation, preventing burnout, and fostering long-term career satisfaction.

Prioritise Impactful Tasks
According to The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), focusing on high-impact teaching practices over low-value administrative tasks leads to better student outcomes and reduces teacher stress. (Source: AITSL, High-Impact Teaching Strategies, 2019)
Design with the End in Mind
Wiggins and McTighe’s Backward Design framework is widely endorsed by educators internationally. Starting with clear learning goals ensures lesson plans are purposeful and aligned to curriculum standards, maximising instructional efficiency. (Source: Wiggins & McTighe, Understanding by Design, 2005)
Use Collaborative Planning
Collaborative planning with colleagues not only saves time but fosters innovation and shared accountability, boosting teaching effectiveness (Source: Hattie, Visible Learning, 2009)
Integrate Technology Wisely
Studies show learning management systems and digital planning tools reduce repetitive administrative work, allowing teachers more time to focus on students (Source: Darling-Hammond et al., Empowered Educators, 2017)
Build Flexibility
Adaptive lesson planning, which accommodates different learning needs and unforeseen events, is linked to increased teacher wellbeing and student engagement (Source: OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey, 2019)
